# Procedural trees shaped by your settings

> Shape procedural trees with height, trunk width, lean, branchiness, leaf fluffiness, roots and a round, cone, flat or weeping crown, or fix them with a seed.

A procedural [tree](https://items.lodemc.net/flora/trees.md) is made up fresh each time it grows, from a few settings. Every tree comes out a little different, within the shape you describe, so a forest of them never looks copied and pasted. Only `log` and `leaves` are required: everything else has a default.

```yaml items/flora/willow/willow.yml theme={null}
willow:
  type: flora
  tree:
    sapling: willow_sapling
    log: willow_log           # yours, or vanilla's like oak_log
    leaves: willow_leaves
    height: 7..11
    trunk-width-bottom: 2
    trunk-width-top: 1
    lean: 0.3
    branchiness: 0.5
    leaf-fluffiness: 0.7
    canopy: weeping
    roots: 0.4
```

## Options

**tree** `section`

| Key | Default | Does |
| - | - | - |
| `log` | required | The trunk and branch block. |
| `leaves` | required | The leaves block. |
| `height` | `5..8` | The trunk's height in blocks: a number or a range like `7..11`, up to 64. |
| `trunk-width-bottom` | `1` | How thick the trunk is at the ground, 1 to 6 blocks. From 4 up its corners are cut off, so it reads round. |
| `trunk-width-top` | `1` | How thick it is at the top. The trunk narrows from the bottom width to this. |
| `lean` | `0.1` | How far the trunk bends away from straight up: `0` is straight, `1` bent far over. |
| `branchiness` | `0.3` | How many branches it has, and how long they are: `0` is none. |
| `leaf-fluffiness` | `0.5` | How big and full the clumps of leaves are: `0` small and ragged, `1` big and round. |
| `canopy` | `round` | The crown's shape: `round` (like an oak), `cone` (like a spruce), `flat` (like an acacia) or `weeping` (like a willow). |
| `roots` | `0` | Logs spreading out along the ground round the base: `0` is none, `1` the most. |
| `seed` | random | A number or any word. With a seed, every tree of this kind grows into exactly the same shape. |

Use `/lodeitems tree <tree> ~ ~ ~` to try settings out: change them, `/lodeitems reload`, and grow another next to it.

## Vanilla blocks only

A procedural tree can be made entirely of vanilla blocks, for example a weeping cherry:

```yaml theme={null}
weeping_cherry:
  type: flora
  tree:
    log: cherry_log
    leaves: cherry_leaves
    height: 5..7
    branchiness: 0.4
    leaf-fluffiness: 0.8
    canopy: weeping
```
